Stardew Valley Mystery Box Guide
Mystery Boxes are a new loot system introduced in version 1.6, dropped by Mr. Qi. They function similarly to Geodes but contain a wide variety of items including rare and valuable rewards.
How to Unlock Mystery Boxes
Mystery Boxes become available after one of these conditions is met:
- Spend 50 days in the valley
- Collect the second Prize Ticket from the billboard
After meeting either condition, you’ll see a cutscene with Mr. Qi and receive a popup notification that Mystery Boxes can now be found.
How to Obtain Mystery Boxes
Regular Sources (Before Foraging Mastery)

- Purchasing from the Calico Egg Merchant at the Desert Festival
- Trout Derby and SquidFest festival rewards
- Trading a Book of Mysteries with the Bookseller
- Opening Skull Cavern treasure chests (3.6% chance)
- Completing Raccoon requests beyond the fifth one
- Completing the Winter Star Bundle (Remixed)
- Using the prize machine in Mayor’s Manor
- Chopping a giant Qi Fruit (when Qi’s Crop quest is NOT active)
- Placing Milk or Cookies on a table during Winter 24th night
Golden Mystery Boxes
After claiming Foraging Mastery, regular Mystery Box attempts have a chance to become Golden Mystery Boxes instead:
- 66% success rate without Book of Mysteries power
- 88% success rate with Book of Mysteries power
Golden Mystery Boxes contain all the same items as regular boxes plus exclusive rewards.
How to Open Mystery Boxes
Take Mystery Boxes to Clint at the Blacksmith to open them for 25g each, just like Geodes.
Note: Unlike Geodes, Mystery Boxes cannot be opened with a Geode Crusher.

- Open 10 Boxes First - Many rare rewards are locked until you’ve opened more than 10 boxes total
- Get the Book of Mysteries - Increases your Mystery Box spawn rate from 66% to 88%
- High Luck Days - Fishing treasure chests and artifact spots have better rates on high-luck days
- Trade Up - After completing the 6th Raccoon request and claiming Foraging Mastery, trade 3 Mystery Boxes for 1 Golden Mystery Box at the Giant Stump
- Trade for Magic Rock Candy - 20 Golden Mystery Boxes can be traded for 1 Magic Rock Candy at the Giant Stump
- Bundle Requirement - 5 Mystery Boxes are needed for the Helper’s Bundle (Remixed Bulletin Board)
