Gems & Minerals Guide
Stardew Valley features 53 donatable minerals divided into four categories: Foraged Minerals, Gems, Geode Minerals, and Geodes. This guide covers every mineral, where to find it, its sell price, and the best strategies for completing your Museum collection.
TL;DR
There are 8 gems (Diamond is 750g, Prismatic Shard is 2,000g), 4 foraged minerals (Quartz to Fire Quartz), and 33 geode minerals (extracted from Geodes, Frozen Geodes, and Magma Geodes). The Gemologist profession (Mining Lv 10, Geologist branch) adds 30% to all mineral sell prices. Break geodes at Clintβs (25g each) or build a Geode Crusher (free processing). All gems can be used for weapon forging at the Volcano Forge.

Omni Geode Sources
Omni Geodes are the most versatile source and can be obtained from:
- Mining any floor in the Mines or Skull Cavern
- Carbon Ghost kills (Skull Cavern)
- Panning in rivers and lakes
- Krobus shop (Tuesdays, 300g)
- Oasis shop (Wednesdays, 1,500g for 5)
- Ginger Island artifact spots
- Fishing treasure chests
The Gemologist Profession
At Mining Level 10, choosing the Geologist branch gives you the Gemologist profession:
| Effect | Details |
|---|---|
| Sell Price Bonus | +30% on all minerals and gems |
| Stacks with | Tiller? No (separate skill). Crafts? No. Only mineral sell prices |
Gemologist vs Excavator
| Profession | Effect | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Gemologist | +30% mineral sell prices | Players who sell many minerals |
| Excavator | Double geode yield chance | Players who want more geodes to crack |
If you primarily process geodes for the Museum, Excavator is better. If you sell most minerals for gold, Gemologist earns more over time. Both are viable.
Museum Completion Tips
- Build a Geode Crusher ASAP (2 Coal + 50 Stone + 1 Gold Bar) β saves 25g per geode processed
- Save Omni Geodes for minerals youβre missing β they can contain anything
- Check Guntherβs missing list frequently by visiting the Museum
- Mine specific floors for missing minerals (e.g., floors 1-39 for Geode minerals)
- Use the βtrack questsβ feature to see which minerals you still need
- Geode minerals are mostly disliked as gifts β the Wizard likes all of them, but everyone else dislikes them

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a Prismatic Shard?
Prismatic Shards can be obtained from: Iridium Nodes (4% chance), Mystic Stones in Skull Cavern (25% chance), Omni Geodes (0.4%), killing Shadow Brutes/Shamans (0.05%), killing Serpents and Mummies (0.1%), or purchased rarely from the Traveling Cart.
Should I donate or sell my first Diamond?
Donate your first Diamond to the Museum for the reward. After that, sell extras β Diamonds sell for 750g (974g with Gemologist) and are loved gifts for 8 NPCs.
Is the Geode Crusher worth building?
Yes. It costs 2 Coal + 50 Stone + 1 Gold Bar to build, and it processes geodes for free. If you process more than 20 geodes, it has already paid for itself compared to paying Clint 25g each.
What happens when I complete the mineral collection?
Completing all mineral donations earns you the Rusty Key from Gunther, which unlocks the Sewer where Krobus lives. This is required for certain quests and achievements.
