Stardew Valley Rain Totem Guide

Overview

The Rain Totem is a consumable crafted item in Stardew Valley that forces the weather to be rainy on the following day. It is an invaluable tool for farmers who need rain for specific crops, fishing, or other weather-dependent activities.

How to Unlock

The Rain Totem crafting recipe is unlocked when you reach Foraging Level 9.

Crafting Recipe

To craft a Rain Totem, you will need:

MaterialQuantity
Hardwood1
Truffle Oil1
Pine Tar5

Material Sources

  • Hardwood: Obtained by chopping large stumps (requires Steel Axe or better) and large logs (requires Steel Axe or better). Can also be found in the Secret Woods and on your farm if you chose the Forest Farm.
  • Truffle Oil: Made by putting a Truffle into an Oil Maker. Truffles are found by Pigs on the farm during Spring, Summer, and Fall (when not raining).
  • Pine Tar: Produced by placing a Tapper on a Pine Tree. Takes 5-6 days to produce.

How to Use

  1. Select the Rain Totem in your inventory.
  2. Use it like any other tool or consumable (right-click on PC, or the equivalent action on console).
  3. The weather for the next day will be forced to rain.

Important Notes

  • The Rain Totem does not work during Winter.
  • It does not work on the first day of a season.
  • It does not stack with other weather effects.
  • On Summer 13, 25, and 26, rain is already guaranteed, so using a Rain Totem on the day before is redundant.
  • Useful for catching rain-only fish, watering crops without using energy, and triggering certain events.

Strategic Uses

  • Fishing: Many rare fish only appear in the rain (e.g., Legend, Catfish).
  • Crop Growth: Saves energy and time by eliminating the need to water crops manually.
  • Battery Packs: If you have Solar Panels, rain will not produce Battery Packs. Plan accordingly.

Sell Price

The Rain Totem cannot be sold directly. However, the materials used to craft it have significant value, especially Truffle Oil.

Version History

  • Available since the initial release of Stardew Valley.
